Highlight an unfamiliar word in subtitles, on a page or in a PDF. It is translated the way it sounds in that sentence, and it stays in your library.
The whole line is read, so the word gets the sense it has in it - not the first entry in a dictionary.
On YouTube and Netflix the line becomes text you can select. Without the key the player is untouched: a click still pauses.
The video waits on that line. Ctrl reads it in its scene; Alt gives the quick dictionary answer instead.
The card says what the words mean here. Save it, and the sentence and the film are kept with it.
A page, a PDF, a comment. A small mark appears at the end of the selection: click it for the same careful reading.
Turn the phone sideways while a video plays and rest your thumb on the left edge. The picture stops on that exact frame.
Keep your thumb in place and run another finger over the words. What they mean in this scene appears right above them.
One tap saves the card. Lift your thumb and the video plays on from the same frame.
Holding the phone upright, rest a finger on the middle of the top edge, by the camera. It works the same in any app, even where the subtitles are burnt into the picture.
Choose a line, select a word or a phrase in it, and compare the two answers.
Select a word or a few in the subtitle.
The sentence, the film and the episode are saved with the word, so a week later you still know what it was about.

First after a day, then after three, then after a week. What you forget comes back more often.
Disagree with the answer? Write your own on the card. If enough people write the same one, it becomes the answer everybody gets.
When the open Tatoeba collection has them, the card adds sentences people really wrote, checked against your scene: those that use the words the same way, and those where the same words mean something else. Later, practice brings the word back in one of them, so you learn the meaning, not only the scene.
Subtitles in web players, any text on a page, and PDFs. Hold the key, drag across the words, let go - the answer appears beside them.

Yes. Ten careful readings a day cost nothing, and after that a card still arrives, with the meaning from the dictionary. Pro removes the ceiling for 3 € a month or 24 € a year.
One Google sign-in. That is what lets a word saved in the browser turn up on the phone.
Cards are written in fourteen languages, the ones in the menu at the bottom of this page. On the phone, subtitles in the Latin alphabet are read for now.
Only the words you select and the line around them, so they can be read. On the phone the words are recognised on the phone itself, and the picture never leaves it.
Not yet. Your library opens in any browser, the one on an iPhone included.
Yes. The extension exports the whole library for Anki.
